Interview with Celebrity Stylist - Mariel Haenn

I thought you’d be interested in getting an insider’s view on the hottest fall trends in Hollywood and the must-have fashions this season from celebrity stylist, Mariel Haenn.

As you may already know, Mariel is the stylist credited with transforming Rihanna’s style, but she’s also worked with Ashlee Simpson, Jeremy Piven, Lauren Conrad, Ciara, Will Smith, Carson Daly, Rainn Wilson, Mandy Moore, etc.

Mariel doesn’t just know about the hottest styles, she also knows simple ways to incorporate new trends into your current wardrobe – so even if you don’t have a celeb budget, you can still have a celeb caliber wardrobe with pieces.

In fact, Mariel has teamed up with the MasterCard and Saks Fifth Avenue Fall 2009 Want it! Collection of statement pieces – the Rocker Boot, Vest and Forever Bag, to name a few – to provide women simple ways to incorporate new trends into their current wardrobe and express their own personal style with versatile fashions (similar to Michael Fink last year).

We were lucky enough to snag an interview with Mariel and she answered all of our questions!

1. Top 5 trends for Fall?
The top five trends for fall that I love right now are from the Saks Fifth Avenue Fall 2009 Want It! campaign presented by MasterCard. Key pieces within that campaign include looks like: the strong shoulder, rocker boots, leggings, cozy knits, and the lacquered lip. All items can be found at Saks Fifth Avenue or on Saks.com and you can use the “the little black card,” the Saks Fifth Avenue World Elite MasterCard for purchases in and out of Saks to earn rewards towards your next Saks purchase.

2. In this economy, what are women really buying this Fall?
This season women should really look to add those staple pieces to their wardrobe. Pieces that stand the test of time and can be worn season after season and still portray that chic look most women are looking for.

3. What do you feel are the worst trends of this season? What should we avoid?
Some of the worst trends for the season would be trying to wear clothes that don’t fit. Having a piece of clothing or an entire outfit not fit properly is definitely a no-no. Also, don’t try to pull off too many trends at once. Trying to overcomplicate an outfit with too many trends should be avoided.

4. How to transition your summer wardrobe to fall?
A few ways to easily transform your summer wardrobe to fall as incorporate a black tight under skirts, dresses or long sweaters. A cozy knit sweater can be worn over anything. A neck loop also transforms key items from the summer to a nice fall look by covering the neck.

5. What is the best style advice you can impart on moms and busy women?
Definitely get yourself a chic flat rocker boot – preferably a motorcycle type. Also try to incorporate items into your wardrobe that transfer easily from a day to night look. A red lacquered lip makes any woman feel amazing and incorporating some sexy shape-wear underneath any piece of clothing allows for a sleek, well fitting look.

6. What can moms wear with destroyed denim and ripped jeans without looking silly?
A strong shouldered blazer can dress up any pair of jeans. Wearing a blazer over a cool graphic t-shirt makes for a great sophisticated look. Don’t try and go over the top and keep to clean, sleek fitting clothes.

7. How to wear thigh high and over the knee boots?
Thigh-high and above the knee boots look great with leggings and t-shirts. Oversized, well fitted cozy knits are also great to wear with your favorite high boot. Just make sure it’s not too short!

8. Trends for coats?
Make sure you get yourself a strong shouldered, structured coat. Structure is definitely key. Military jackets are also very hot this season. Whatever you wear, just make sure it fits well!

She wore her dress without a belt, but added a dramatic red clutch and white pointy pumps to punch up her look.

I really wasn’t a fan of Kim’s au naturel make-up, but I did like the way she belted the dress so she wins for me as white pumps make me shudders.

After years of short, choppy layers dominating the catwalk and celebrity circuit, it seems that long layers are finally making a return to popularity. And it's not hard to see why: a long layered cut is one of the most versatile hairstyles you can choose from, and flatters the majority of face shapes. It's easy to maintain and gives volume and texture to flat hair, while providing the ideal shape for naturally curly hair... the list of reasons to choose this cut practically goes on forever!

The long layered cut is expected to be the key hairstyle of 2010

Long layered cuts were all over the catwalks of this year's New York Fashion Week and Milan Fashion Week. These two fashion events are the most influential global fashion indicators not only in terms of clothes, accessories and shoes, but also in regards to makeup and hair. Not only that, but several high-profile celebrities have taken to sporting long layers too, which is usually a sign of things to come in terms of hairstyles in the public arena.

With a long layered cut, your shortest layers are still longer than chin-length, which means that they won't blow in your eyes when your hair is loose, and they'll make it into the band or clip of most updos. This cut will still give your hair texture and volume, but it will be a smoother and more natural shape than what is created by short layers. Best of all is that you can make your touch-ups less regular. As a long layered cut has less of a forced shape than a short layered cut, it won't need trimming as regularly to keep it looking its best. As such, long layers are an ideal choice for those of us who are growing our hair to our waists.

Celebrity hairstyles change as often as the seasons come and go... but do they always get it right? These recent hair color changes struck-out in my opinion. Change isn’t always a good thing!

“I’m Bored with Celebrity Hairstyles”Rihanna, forever the style risk-taker, recently went from black to blonde. Adding in chunky blonde highlights to her dark hair gave her already rocker hairstyle an even edgier look. My take on this celebrity hair color change . . . I think that the blonde is all wrong and should be red or purple instead. This blonde is brassy and in great need of a toner. If Rihanna wants her hair to look rocker-chic, red or purple where the blonde is would give her exactly what she needs.

Celebrity hairstyles transform repeatedly

Jessica Alba changes hair colors faster than we can keep up with! A few months back she was a brunette, then morphed into a blonde and now she has taken on this auburn red hue. The red reminds me of another celebrity hair color change, namely Ashlee Simpson-Wentz’s. The shade is flattering on Ashlee, but I can’t say the same for Jessica Alba. I would like to see Jessica go back to brunette this season. Brunette is the most flattering hair color I’ve seen on Jessica Alba for her skin tone.

Drew is a chameleon!

Just when I was loving Drew Barrymore’s big blonde hairstyle, she goes and switches it up on. Her new hair color of choice is blonde with black tips. This look reminds me of vintage Gwen Stefani when she colored the tips of her hair pink. I’m not sure what prompted Drew Barrymore to do this to her hair, but I am not a fan. She should go back to a honey blonde color for now and ditch the black hairstyle!

ASHLEE SIMPSON is showing super-flat abs in a red-hot bikini on the cover of the new Shape magazine, on stands May 5th. Inside, she talks about her new exercise and diet routine.

"I never thought I'd be on the cover of a magazine in a bikini," the 23-year-old singer tells the mag, but says she couldn't say no after working out two to three times a week with celebrity trainer MICHAEL ALEXANDER. She also sticks to a diet of yogurt and granola for breakfast, turkey or veggie wraps for lunch and lean proteins like fish and chicken for dinner.

"I try to listen to what my body craves," she tells the mag. "Sometime it tells me to eat more fruit, but sometimes it tells me to eat Skittles!"

Unless you're in the hairdressing industry, it's unlikely that you'd be able to distinguish a 2009 layered 'do from, say, a 2007 one. But if you look at the changing hair fashions decade by decade, the evolution is really quite extraordinary! Like all fashions, the hairstyle changes are largely dependent on the pop culture of the time, as well as shifting societal values. Let's take a look at the hair fashions of the last sixty years, one decade at a time.

The 1950s - short, neat and curled

The 1950s

Young women in the 1950s had no desire for the long, flowing hair that many girls lust after today. Hair was short, soft and neat, and almost always curled. Of course, there were no curling tongs back in those days: in order to achieve the neat curly hairdos, women would perm their hair, then use heated rollers on a daily basis, or pin the curls into place and spray liberally with hairspray. A huge amount of effort was put into styling their hair, as well as considerable discomfort - most women would actually keep their rollers in overnight while they slept! As feminism was yet to make a real impact in Western society, a woman's appearance was of huge importance, and so the effort was deemed worthwhile.

Later in the 1950s, hair became big and bold: beehives became commonplace, as did the poodle perm (think Lucille Ball) and bouffant hair a la Brigitte Bardot. While these looks were far sexier than the overly neat styles of the early fifties, they still required a large amount of effort, not to mention can after can of hairspray.

The bouffant styles remained extremely popular throughout the 1960s. The bob was by far the most popular style, and although fashion was becoming more modern, hair was still highly controlled, with lots of volume and lots of hairspray. The idea of hair being made to move was yet to come into vogue: in the sixties, the less it moved, the better. Some of these 'dos look like they would survive a tornado!

By far my favourite decade in terms of fashion, the 1970s were all about peace, love and freedom: ideals which were, of course, symbolised by that decade's hairstyles. The shag, the afro, the mullet, 'Farrah flicks', the disco wedge... hairstyles were hugely varied, but all were unstructured and had an essence of freedom about them. Very long, straight hair was in vogue, but because straightening irons were yet to be invented, women used to iron their hair flat using actual clothes irons! Talk about a fire hazard...

Two of the major celebrity trendsetters of the 1970s, when it came to hair fashions, were Cher and the recently departed Farrah Fawcett. Cher's hair was the envy of many - long, straight, thick and natural - while Fawcett pioneered a look entirely her own, which was light and feathered, and flicked out at the front. Both looks required a minimum of styling and are still popular today, though they have evolved considerably since the hippie era.

The 1980s saw the return of big hair, but in a very different form to the prissy bouffant styles of the 1950s and early sixties. A whole new array of products were on the market - gels, waxes and mousses - and people weren't afraid to experiment with them! The result was all kinds of crazy styles with an emphasis on volume. Crimping the hair was a popular method of styling, fringes were thick and puffy, and accessories were the order of the day: headbands, scrunchies, bobbles and brightly coloured ribbons (sometimes all at once). Young girls and teenagers loved the side-pony look, and if your hair was short, then it was either fluffy and permed, or gelled and spiky.

Punk hair also began to emerge in the eighties, paralleling the punk rock music scene. Hardcore punk types began to dye their hair neon colours, some opting for a mohawk or an extreme mullet. By the late eighties, the natural styles of the previous decade had become but a distant memory, as consumerism peaked and bad fashions reigned supreme. It's no wonder we cringe when we look back on these images! And although eighties-style fashions may have become trendy again, thankfully the hair is (for the most part) staying where it belongs: in the past.

The 1990s

Thankfully, the 1980s had to end, and with it ended the excessive use of products and the crazy, pumped-up hair. Nineties hair became more natural again, but rather than the contrived 'natural' of the 1970s, it actually was natural! Grunge was the key fashion ideology of the early to mid-nineties, bringing with it effortless, wash-and-wear hair. Messy updos and basic ponytails were the order of the day, though long hair was often worn loose and flowing - a throwback to the seventies.

Women of the 1990s just didn't have the time for fussy hairstyles, so they didn't bother: they were too busy making a name for themselves in business, politics and academia, as well as keeping up the traditional female roles of wife and mother. Spending any more than ten minutes on your hair was deemed excessive and unnecessary - quite a contrast with the 1950s, and thank God for that!

The two major hairstyles that emerged in the 1990s were 'The Rachel' - named and styled after Jennifer Aniston's character Rachel on the hit TV show Friends - and 'The Bedhead', which was basically a tousled, layered crop pioneered by actress Meg Ryan. Both styles were easily maintained and therefore, truly ubiquitous.

Crazy hair colours faded out of fashion, with women preferring natural highlights, although a big auburn-hair phase lasted for a few years in the 1990s. By the turn of the century, hairstyles in general were simple, natural, and far less likely to cause future embarrassment than those of the previous decade.

2000 - present

Hair of the early 21st century has largely been about personal taste, though a few distinct trends have appeared. First of all is the evolution of the shag: a highly textured, layered style that peaked in popularity a few years ago. It was often accompanied by a long, sideswept fringe, which later evolved into a blunt fringe reminiscent of the 1960s. Long hair was usually layered, and either straightened to glossy perfection, or tonged into tousled, carefree waves.

The last few years have seen a re-emergence of punk hairstyles, as part of the 'emo' and 'scene' countercultures of the late Generation Y. Choppy hair, heavily layered, either dyed pitch black, blonde, or in vibrant colours has become popular with teenagers, while those in their twenties and above have generally chosen to keep a more natural look: lightly layered and textured, an evolution of the styles that became popular in the 1990s.

The great thing about hair is that regardless of the trends, the way we wear it comes down to personal choice: if we want to shave our heads, then we can, and if we want to grow our hair past our hips, we can do that too. What was Jennifer’s hair like when she first came to your salon?
I’ve been doing Jennifer’s hair forever. When I first met her, she had long, one-length hair with bangs, and she was like, “Don’t cut my hair—I want my hair long.” But I’m a hairdresser, so I obviously cut her hair and told her she needed to grow her bangs out. I cut a couple inches off and layered it from her bangs down to the ends. Then I taught her how to pin the bangs over with a bobby pin and make them flat—remember how everyone was doing that on the first year of Friends? Six weeks later, she came back to the salon for another haircut—her bangs were longer, and we just cut a little bit more off her length. The next thing you know, her bangs were down to her chin, and the rest of her hair was at her shoulders in these long, loose layers that sort of flipped out—and that’s what we called the Rachel.

What was the Friends hairstyle inspired by?
I’m always inspired by other hairdressers, models, fashion, and magazines like ELLE. For the Rachel, I was inspired by a model named Beri Smither—Ward Stegerhoek did her hair at the time. She was wearing this really great shag haircut—it wasn’t the Rachel, but it inspired me. These days, though, Jen likes her hair on the longer side with her layers grown out.

What’s Jennifer’s natural hair texture?
She has naturally wavy, medium-texture hair, and she has what you would call good hair—it goes curly really easily if you scrunch it, and if you blow-dry it straight, it stays straight but with body.

What shampoo and conditioner does she use?

I cut her hair religiously every six weeks, but between visits, she takes care of her hair, she really does—she doesn’t rip through it when she brushes it after a shower. So how would you describe her hair personality?
She’s not one to say, “Oh, I want something really funky.” She likes pretty, sexy hair. “Pretty” to me is adding texture, and “sexy” is undone-looking hair. If you look at her hair, it looks like it grew out of her head like that—it doesn’t look like a curling iron touched it. We never use curling irons or flatirons on her hair. The secret lies within the experience of the hair designer, talent, and time spent. Of these variables, one separates the $10 haircut from the $300 haircut. You might be thinking it is the experience and talent of the hair designer. This does matter, but in my opinion, the determining factor is the time spent.

It makes sense that a salon that caters to the majority of population's income level, would make more money charging a low price and depend on high volumes of traffic. This means the hair designer must work fast, and get as many customers in and out as quickly possible. The hair designer has been trained to cut a specific way that maximizes the cutting time, and minimizes the time spent.

I have worked in such a place when I first started in the industry. I was taught to use the same cutting techniques on every customer, without consideration given to the individualistic characteristics of each person's hair. I have never seen any two people with the exact hair texture, wave pattern, amount of hair, etc. A person's hair is like their fingerprints, and unique from anyone else's. Therefore, using the same cutting techniques on everyone does not and cannot result in an awesome haircut.

After about a year of working in the franchise-quickie haircut salon, I knew the customers were less than thrilled with the haircuts. Therefore, despite the goals set by the salon, I decided to slow down and pay attention to each customer's uniqueness. The difference was dramatic. I found that by combing the hair and checking how the hair was responding to each snip I made, I could take the ordinary haircut into an awesome haircut.

Cutting this way took longer of course, but the result was well worth the effort. I learned that even microscopic snips in the right places is the key to awesome haircuts. It was not a matter of sticking to a particular cutting method; it was a matter of taking my time. I became a hair artist, and the customers loved it. Eventually this led me to work in a more exclusive hair salon, where I could take my time and charge more money. I was surprised to find that a good majority of my customers were willing to pay three to four times what they were paying in order to have me cut their hair in the new salon.

The best hair designers take their time. They do not rush, look at the clock, walk away from their customer in the middle of a haircut to answer a phone, skip the pre-haircut consultation, or let their customer leave with wet hair. All of these things add up to a $10 haircut. If you have been accustomed to this kind of treatment, you probably have never had an awesome haircut. You do not have to spend $300 to get an awesome haircut, but you have to find someone who is willing to take his or her time cutting hair, or cut hair yourself.

I want to encourage you, to learn how to cut your family and friends hair at home. As you can see from my experience, once you have the basic knowledge of haircutting (as my videos will teach you) you have what it takes to create awesome haircuts. Apply the cutting techniques with taking your time, and you and your family will never have to go back to getting ordinary haircuts again.

Following are 3 rules that have helped me time and again to grow my hair out to that long hairstyle I love.

- When growing hair out from short hair to a long hairstyle, it is helpful to get a layered cut. With layers, some of that awkward in between stage is avoided. There is no way to get completely around that time when a short cut is growing out and all that can be done is to put it up in a pony or pins, but layering will act as camouflage until the top of the hair can catch up to the bottom for a long straight style. Long layers are also a very elegant and popular style currently, so a layered cut is not a waste of time and effort by any means. Plus layers add body and character to long straight hair that tends to be flat, so if you have not considered a long layered look, do so; it looks good on everyone.

- For hair to increase its length quickly, it has to grow faster than it breaks. This means get two awesome conditioners. One for in the shower, to leave on after the natural oils have been stripped from the hair by shampooing, to restore some of its vitamins and minerals, and one to leave in, to protect your hair from the environment and keep it healthy.
